Black Businesses Recognized

Best of Black Baltimore Initiative

In partnership with The Baltimore Times, the Best of Black Baltimore campaign is the first city‑wide celebration dedicated solely to honoring Black‑owned and Black‑operated businesses across Baltimore. Conceived by The Baltimore Times—a steadfast champion of positive storytelling and economic empowerment since 1986—the initiative was born from one simple conviction: when Black entrepreneurs thrive, the entire city prospers. Giving the Community a Voice from the outset, the campaign was designed as a grassroots effort. Residents nominated their favorite businesses through an open online survey; those nominations became the ballot the public now votes on at BestofBlackBaltimore.com. By handing the microphone to Baltimoreans themselves, the program amplifies authentic community voices and ensures that the winners truly reflect local priorities and pride.

Tackling an Unexpected Challenge

Launching a first‑ever celebration came with a surprising hurdle: many Baltimoreans did not immediately see why “being celebrated” mattered. Years of under‑recognition had conditioned both consumers and business owners to underestimate the value of public acclaim. The Baltimore Times responded with a sustained education drive—editorials, social‑media explainers, street‑team outreach—clarifying that recognition is more than a moment in the spotlight: it attracts customers, opens doors to capital, and fuels neighborhood job growth. That educational push transformed initial skepticism into enthusiastic participation
